About Julian

Julian Morgan-Smith is an Australian piano technician, consultant, and educator dedicated to raising the standard of piano servicing across the country. Based in Melbourne, Julian currently serves as head piano technician at Yamaha Music Australia and Vice-President of the Piano Tuners and Technicians Guild of Victoria (PTTGV).

Julian began his training at the Australasian School of Piano Technology, later advancing his expertise at the Yamaha Piano Technical Academy in Kakegawa, Japan — Yamaha’s global centre for piano technical training — where he earned Grand Master and Concert Master Technician status, an achievement held by only a select few technicians in Australia.

Alongside his extensive fieldwork with private clients, institutions, and concert venues, Julian is deeply committed to technician education and professional development. He leads specialised training programs across Australia, including Yamaha’s renowned Grand Regulation Workshops and ongoing Hybrid Piano Servicing Workshops.

Julian’s expertise is also recognised at an industry level, having presented lectures at the Australasian Piano Tuners and Technicians Association (APTTA) conventions in 2019, 2023, and 2025. Through a balance of traditional craftsmanship, modern technical knowledge, and mentorship, he supports the next generation of technicians while ensuring that pianos in homes, schools, and concert venues are maintained to the highest standards.
