About Julian

Julian Morgan-Smith is a leading Australian piano technician and consultant, currently serving as head piano technician at Yamaha Music Australia and Vice President of the Piano Tuners and Technicians Guild of Victoria (PTTGV).
He initially trained at the Australasian School of Piano Technology, later undertaking advanced study at the Yamaha Piano Technical Academy in Kakegawa, Japan — Yamaha’s global centre for piano technical training — where he achieved Grand Master and Concert Master Technician qualifications, an accomplishment held by only a select few technicians in Australia.

Earlier in his career, Julian worked at the Steinway & Sons dealership in Sydney, gaining experience with some of the world’s finest performance instruments across a range of venues and client needs.

Beyond day-to-day servicing, Julian is passionate about technician education. He has delivered specialised training across Australia, including presenting Yamaha’s “Under the Lid” piano educator workshops, running Grand Regulation Workshops for piano technicians, and leading hybrid piano servicing courses around Australia.
He has also lectured at the APTTA National Conventions in 2019, 2023, and 2025 on advanced regulation, voicing, and hybrid piano technologies.

Julian’s experience spans from private homes to major conservatories, concert venues, recording studios, and piano competitions, combining formal training, concert-standard technical skills, and a commitment to maintaining the highest level of service for every client.
